We are learning computer science as the science of processing information. It is about building, creating and inventing machines that automatically process all kinds of information from numbers to text, images or video. Over time, with advancements of processing, AI became more and more complex. For instance, in recent time, we started to make machines to listen to what we say.
Algorithms and Computer Science
- When processing information, computer applied algorithm.
- Algorithms are like cooking recipes for mathematicians.
- Originality of computer science is to think of algorithm as information.
- Different set of algorithms are setup for example addition algorithm or multiplication algorithm.
- All these algorithms can be processed in a same machine.
All-Purpose Machine
- In our previous article on history of computer machines, we found early 1936, Alan Turing proposed mathematical model of computation: Turing machine.
- A Turing machine consists of a strips of tape on which symbols can be written.
- It uses alphabet (0 or 1) and a set of numbered instructions.
Where does Artificial Intelligence fit in All?
- Artificial intelligence consists of specific programs.
- According to Minsky (1968), AI is “the building of computer programs which perform tasks which are for the moment, performed in a more satisfactory way by humans because they require high level mental processes such as: perception learning, memory organization and critical reasoning”
- Nowadays, there exist many AI program capable of resolving information processing tasks predicting weather, playing Sudoku.
- All of these algorithm comes from human applies into computer.
- If there is any intelligence, it comes from the programmer who gave the machine the right instructions.
A Machine that learns?
- Writing an AI program is not easy task as one must write instruction to produce a response that looks intelligent.
- Rather than writing detailed instructions, computer scientists often use sophisticated programs that extract the right answer automatically from some data source.
- This principle is the key to an AI technique known as machine learning.
- The data processing is written in the program as datum to the machine.
- A datum can be modified or build by another program.
- A good data will help to produces a learning processing system.
- AI program using machine learning can only produce a “good” program if we give it good data and good instructions.
So, What is AI?
- To understand what AI is, there is couple of method to write Artificial intelligence programs.
- Above Minsky ‘s definition may be obsolete as there is a limit on computer can perform.
- La Recherche magazine in 1979, states “Artificial intelligence seeks to equip computer systems with intellectual abilities comparable to those of humans”.
