Turning lights on by speaking to them may sound like science fiction, but internet connected household devices allow people to do this and much more. Let explore how smart appliances work in home.

  1. Smart appliances are home devices and gadgets that are controlled using apps on a smartphone or via interactive panels in the home.
  2. The earliest smart homes appeared in 1970S when a Scottish company called Pico Electronics introduced the X10 system.
  3. This system allowed people to control electrical devices in their homes using a central computer controller and their existing electrical wiring system.
  4. Nowadays, devices include tiny computers that can connect to smartphones via bluetooth or Wi-Fi, allowing users to control their devices, even when they are not physically at home.

Benefits of a connected home

  1. A home installed with smart devices has a number of benefits.
  2. Instead of worrying about having left a computer on, a user can check the devices status and switch it off via their smartphone.
  3. An indoor positioning system (IPS) can locate objects and people inside a house using sensory information.
  4. Smart appliance apps also give users access to data about how long they have been used for and how much energy they have used.

  2. Smart locks can open the front door automatically for approved people but keep strangers out.
  3. Smart smoke alarms can turn electrical appliances off if they detect smoke or carbon monoxide, and even alert emergency services.

  1. A digital assistant is a small device that uses internet to answer questions to them by an owner.
  2. They can also be linked up to smart devices in the home and used to control things such as lighting, doors and temperature.

Smart Plant monitor

  1. Smart devices and appliances contain sensors that allow internal computers to gather data.
  2. A smart plant monitor can detect low levels of moisture in a plant’s soil and either message the owner or . if they have an attached reservoir release some water automatically.

Robots at Home

  1. Home robots include a vacuum cleaner with Wi-Fi access that can be controlled from smartphone app, a robot lawn mower, and a robot alarm clock on the wheels that drives away, forcing its owner to get out of bed to switch it off.

In summary, we are moving towards modern and robot doing all the work at home.
